Massive cyberattack compromises Argentine government identification databas

VULNERABILITY EXPOSED: HACKING TO THE RENAPER DATABASE

In a recent cyberattack, a cybercriminal managed to infiltrate the Argentine government’s computer network and steal details from the identification cards of the entire population of the country. The target of the attack was the National Registry of Persons (RENAPER), a vital entity within the Argentine Ministry of the Interior, in charge of issuing national identity cards and storing data in digital format.

EXPOSED DATA: REVELATIONS ON TWITTER AND SALES IN CLANDESTINE FORUMS

The magnitude of the hack became evident when a newly registered user on Twitter, under the name @AnibalLeaks, published photos of the identity cards and personal details of 44 Argentine celebrities, including President Alberto Fernández and prominent soccer players such as Lionel Messi and Sergio Omen. The cybercriminal subsequently announced on a hacking forum his intention to sell access to the RENAPER database and later confirmed possessing a copy of the data, thus challenging the Argentine government’s official statement.

GOVERNMENT RESPONSE AND CONTINUATION OF THE THREAT

Following the leak on Twitter, the Argentine government confirmed the security incident and indicated that eight government employees are being investigated for their possible involvement in the leak. However, the cybercriminal claimed to have access to the entire database, including highly sensitive information such as processing numbers and identification photographs. Additionally, he announced plans to sell and possibly leak the data of up to two million Argentine citizens in the coming days.

IMPACT AND POTENTIAL RISKS

This incident represents the second major hack in the country’s recent history, following the Gorra Leaks in 2017 and 2019. The massive exposure of personal information of Argentine citizens poses serious risks of identity theft, fraud and other cybercrimes. In addition, it shows the urgent need to improve cybersecurity measures in government institutions to protect the population’s sensitive data.

With this news, the growing threat posed by cybercrime is evident and the importance of implementing effective cybersecurity measures in all organizations, both government and business, to protect the privacy and security of the data of citizens and users.
